After a hugely encouraging win away to Rhydyfelin in their first game in the newly constituted Division One East Central, Treorchy fell to a disappointing defeat to Bedlinog last Saturday in their opening home fixture of the season.

Playing with the breeze in the first half, Treorchy began the game with a real sense of purpose and opened the scoring after just two minutes courtesy of an excellent try from wing Trystan Lazarus whose angled line was found by a neat short pass from full back Celyn Ashton before he rounded the covering defence.  From out wide outside half Jordan Lloyd added the extras to push the home side into an early lead.

After the early shock, the visitors responded well to Treorchy’s attempts to play with width and extend their lead as both sides struggled to put together any attacking momentum.  Not helping the Zebras' cause were a couple of injuries in the backline which resulted in a number of positional changes.

Without dominating the contest, Treorchy edged the scrum battle, while Bedlinog were guilty of inaccuracy at the line out, but the area of clear dominance was the visitors' ability to slow down the ruck with Treorchy unable to generate quick ball.  This, allied to the visitors disciplined defence, resulted in a stalemate as the first half ended with no further score.

With the wind now in their favour Bedlinog tied the score with an early converted try of their own as Robert Blake dived over from short range following an inside pass from an attacking scrum five.  The try was awarded despite the suspicion that the number eight had lost control of the ball whilst in the act of scoring.

As the time ticked down Treorchy looked the most likely to grab a winning score but were guilty of ignoring a couple of wide angled penalty chances deep in the Bedlinog twenty two in favour of kicking to the corner.  Typically the visitors were able to repel the attacks, albeit while having to deal with the loss of second player to a yellow card.

Bedlinog were able to ride out the spell when down to 14 men and, with the game already deep into injury time, the hitherto disappointing Bedlinog backline produced one of the moves of the match to snatch victory as they ran back a clearance kick from Treorchy and two missed tackles later wing James Rees dove over in the corner to record the win.

Treorchy slipped to their fifth consecutive defeat last Saturday against local rivals Mountain Ash at the Oval.

Late comers might have missed Treorchy opening the scoring as centre Trystan Lazarus broke the defensive line with a good angle from a delayed pass from Jordan Lloyd and then showed good speed to round the full back for a try after less than two minutes.

Mountain Ash responded with a try of their own after some fine offloading set up hooker Craig Evans for the easy stroll over after fifteen minutes.  Mount had earlier failed to capitalise on an excellent break out of defence thanks to a last ditch smothering try saving tackle from full back Ryan Evans.

An entertaining, but error strewn half was completed with Lazarus added to his earlier score with a second five pointer either side of penalty kick for both sides.  Having opted for the scrum five following a series of visiting penalties, a couple of hit ups form the scrum sucked in some of the covering defence, and the centre had enough gas to show and go through a gap for his second try of the afternoon.

The second half was entertaining, but for wholly different reasons.

Despite some of the worst kick off receiving seen at the Oval, Mountain Ash took a firm grip of the game with two scores in the opening fifteen minutes of the half, both courtesy of impressive scrum half Ross Davies.  The first as a result of some lax defence around the fringes of the ruck, which allowed Davies to trot over to score beneath the posts virtually unopposed.  His second, following a penalty from Jordan Lloyd which had retaken the lead for Treorchy, displayed the scrum half’s strength as he just managed to power to the try line following a hand off from a scrum on the Treorchy line.

A significant sub plot to the game was the sudden brandishing of four yellow cards in quick succession – the first three to Treorchy and one to Mountain Ash – and all but one harsh.

The first was administered to second row Darren Davies for collapsing a rolling maul.  There was little doubt in the actual offence, but given it was the first instance of it in the whole match from either side and with the advancing maul barely into Treorchy territory, the player can feel aggrieved with the extent of his punishment.

The second yellow card, immediately after Mount’s third try, was shown to full back Ryan Evans for failing to use his arms in a tackle.  There could be little complaint, but with the side down to 13 men, compounded the earlier harsh decision.

Then from the next passage of play, Treorchy found themselves down to 12 men as prop Rhys Gillard was also shown yellow for a shoulder charge tackle for what appeared to be a forceful tackle, but one in which his arms had been used and one in which his chest rather than his shoulder had made contact with the opposition player.

Next up was Mount’s turn as a midfield penalty for hands in a ruck saw the fourth yellow card in less than ten minutes.  Despite the reduced playing numbers, Treorchy were able to hold out with no further loss as both sides traded penalty kicks.

With the match edging into the final quarter, Treorchy managed to create a couple of attacking opportunities deep into the visitors twenty-two, but Mount’s defence scrambled well to deny the home side.  Meanwhile, Treorchy will regret the miss of two penalty opportunities which would have secured the losing bonus point which was the minimum Treorchy would have deserved from the match.  The second of which saw the final whistle blown with referee Jones compounding his inconsistent afternoon by blowing up two minutes short of 40 for the second half in succession, ignoring the handful of injuries also.

After four consecutive defeats in Swalec Division One East Central, Treorchy picked up their second victory of the season away to Dowlais last Saturday.

Situated in one of the more exposed parts of Wales, the Klondyke pitch in Dowlais is renown for being more liable to the vagaries of the Welsh weather and so it proved as a moderate October afternoon morphed into a fierce wind blowing up the Merthyr Valley at kick off, creating problems for backs and goal kickers alike.

Playing with the wind in the first half Treorchy would have been looking to accrue a healthy lead, but a stuttering line out, a sturdy home defence and a bit too much ambition to play with width in the conditions restricted the visitors to just two long range penalty attempts in the opening half hour, all of which were missed.  In fact it wasn’t until the final ten minutes of the half that Treorchy had any meaningful possession in the Dowlais twenty-two, but a third penalty was also missed as the first half ended with the rare score line of 0-0.

Facing the elements in the second half, Treorchy faced a stiff challenge, but they got an early tonic as the hugely impressive young tight head prop Meurig Davies scored the games opening try.  In the first half Treorchy had exposed some lethargy in the home side’s pick and drive defence, but had not pushed the advantage.  Facing the elements, an early passage of pick and drive play drew immediate dividends as Davies broke some weak fringe tackling and managed to drive over from close range.  From wide, the conversion was not unsurprisingly missed.

With over half an hour still to play, the flimsy lead seemed far from match winning, but an excellent performance form the visiting pack led by the outstanding flank forward Damon Filmer, held firm against an increasingly frustrated Dowlais side who also displayed a bit too much ambition for the conditions.  However, they did create a couple of chances, but were guilty of overplaying at times and also of butchering a gilt edge opportunity where an overlap was missed in favour of a no-look pass that drifted harmlessly behind the supporting players.  With the game already into the final ten minutes Dowlais finally managed to gain a solid foothold in the Treorchy twenty-two, but a gutsy and committed defensive rear-guard performance from the pack managed to see out the game and secure the points.
